Room Preparation
Removing Newer Wallpaper
Newer wallpaper must be tested to see if it will easily peel away.
Removing Older Wallpaper
Removing Washable Wallpaper
Washable wallpaper presents a different challenge as it won’t absorb liquid easily.
Steam Removal
Removing wallpaper with a steamer is a task that requires two people. It is essential to pull the wallpaper while steaming it. This process can be challenging, and prior experience removing this type of wallpaper is highly recommended. You may need to score the paper before steaming it, so read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using the steamer properly. Our advice, however, is to call the pros and let them do a steam removal.

The process typically involves preparing your space by removing furniture and covering floors, scoring the wallpaper to allow removal solutions to penetrate, applying a wallpaper removal solution, letting it soak, and then gently scraping off the wallpaper. After removal, it’s important to clean any leftover adhesive from the walls and repair any damage before painting.
Key tools include a wallpaper scoring tool, a scraper, protective gloves, drop cloths, and a wallpaper removal solution (such as a commercial remover or a homemade mix of vinegar and hot water). For tougher jobs, a wallpaper steamer can be helpful. Personal protective equipment like gloves and eye protection is also recommended.
Wallpaper removal can sometimes cause minor damage, such as small holes or gouges, especially if the wallpaper is old or was applied directly to drywall. After removal, repair any imperfections with drywall compound, sand the surface smooth, and prime the wall before painting to ensure a flawless finish.
For wallpaper that doesn’t peel off easily, use a scoring tool to perforate the surface, then apply a removal solution to soften the adhesive. If there are multiple layers, you may need to repeat the process or use a steamer. In some cases, only the top layer comes off initially, requiring additional passes to remove the entire wall covering.
Painting over wallpaper is generally not recommended, as it can lead to peeling and an uneven finish. Proper removal ensures a smooth, long-lasting result. However, in rare cases where removal is impractical, some opt to cover the wallpaper with new drywall, though this adds wall thickness and may require adjustments to outlets and trim.
